On October 18, 2023, the Bishop Union High School Varsity Mathletes team drove to Silver
Valley to compete against four other teams. They brought home a victory after completing 10
individual problems and 1 team problem, with 38 points total. That is 5 points more than the
second-place team, Tehachapi! Silver Valley took third with 27 points, Rosamond in fourth with
13 points and Boron brought up the rear with 12 points. Our team is still going strong after
winning both their meets so far!
One of the 10 extremely challenging individual problems that the team had to solve was:
10. Find the octagon area formed from a 3-inch by 3-inch square. The vertices of the
octagon are on points dividing the square’s sides into thirds.
As for individual awards, Sam Wilson took home a first-place ribbon, after a perfect score of 10
points. Alyssa Buchholz won second place overall with 8 points, Cooper Beard and Jodie
Bedore won third with 6 points, and Hunter Dermody won fourth with 5 points. Also competing
on the team were Anwyn Benson Hernandez, Sabrina Elwell, and Sydney Norcross.
The next meet will be on November 15th! Be sure to cheer them on!
