Interested in Drug Prevention? Youth Coalition Is For You!

Over the past couple of years, e-cigarettes are becoming a bigger problem, especially among our youth. Many schools across the United States are putting together small groups that try to prevent the use of tobacco and other harmful products. In fact, in our school, we have a Youth Coalition that does many activities throughout the school year.

April Eagan, the advisor for the club, holds meetings every Tuesday in room 106. Eagan works as a Prevention Manager for Inyo County Health & Human Services. This means she supervises employees who work directly with clients in programs like the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program, Tobacco Control, and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Prevention.

“My role in preventing vaping is to share information with parents, youth, and community members so they can make informed decisions. I give presentations to parents and to high school students on the risks of vaping. I look up the most updated research on the topic of vaping.” Eagan says. When asked about what this club does she responded with, “Youth Co goes on a trip to Sacramento each spring, to visit the state capitol and attend training with other youth from across the state. I recently facilitated a tobacco cessation class for adults, which helped people quit cigarettes and vaping.”
