Bronco Football Extends Win Streak to 4 Games With Win Over Rival KV

Friday night was a big game for the Broncos as it marked the beginning of League play, and they were taking on their rival Kern Valley in their home territory. After a blunder on the kickoff KV got across midfield and into Broncos territory but ended up being forced to punt by a strong Bronco Defense.

The Broncos offense started off driving the ball getting 2 first downs that got the boys into the red zone, but they turned over the ball on downs after a failed fourth down conversion. The Bronco defense held the Broncs again forcing a punt, helped out by a big play by the little engine who could, Mark Mayhugh, who batted a ball out of the air to force a 4th and 24.

Despite having to punt, the Broncs got the ball right back after the Broncos failed to recover the ball after it hit one of the players in the leg, leading to a Kv field goal.

The Broncos responded with their first touchdown of the game, courtesy of a Seteven Paco run. The Broncos couldn’t hold the lead though and ended the first half down by 6 after a KV touchdown, and a PAT that was blocked by “The Mountain”, Kade Edmiston.

Wesley Pettet opened the scoring in the second half for the Broncos, with a 9 yard TD run on a 4th and 3 in the Broncos first possession. The rest of the third quarter went by quietly despite the Broncos turning over the ball for the third time in the game on an interception. The Broncos kicked a 40-yard field goal in the 4th after losing control of the ball on a handoff, and then Jaden Braithwaite iced the game with a 30 yard TD run, putting the Broncos ahead by a final score of 24-9, a score good enough to put the Broncos record at 5-2.

Coach Palu said that it was a “great team win. We were down at the half, but we stayed poised and cleaned up mistakes during the second half, and we dominated Kern Valley once we did that. I want to say hats off to KV for playing a good game, something we expect from our rivals.” Palu said that they only made “small adjustments to the running game at the half”, but the main reason for the second half success was “just cleaning up mistakes” because once that happened, they “controlled the game”. Palu says that since getting big wins like this are fun, “practices are fun, and it helps build momentum for the postseason” and that “it’s a great time to be a Bronco!”.
