Bronco Offense Ignites in Blowout Against Whittier Christian

The story for the Broncos in their last 3 games has been their struggling offense and stellar defense. The boys were able to scrape out a win with only one touchdown in their first game, but that total wasn’t enough in the next two, despite the defense not allowing more than 13 points in each game. Last week in a refreshing change, the Bronco offense everybody knows and loves showed up on the field against the Heralds. The Broncos started off the game by kicking, and the defense kept Whittier Christian from even getting a first down, helped out by 3 penalties on the Heralds offense. The Bronco offense didn’t waste any time getting things done, finding the end zone on their first play, a 46 yard run on the outside by Junior Jaden Braithwaite.

The Bronco Defense again didn’t even allow the Heralds to get ten yards and stuffed their fake punt attempt, culminating in another first play touchdown on a 26-yard pass to Junior Luke Mcclean from Sophomore Clay Omohundro. After the Heralds went three and out again, the Broncos had 3 consecutive penalties in a row one of which cost Junior Wesley Pettet a 30-yard run. Thankfully that didn’t affect too much as on the next play Mcclean completed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Sophomore Manny Talavera. After the 4th drive in a row where the Heralds went 3 and out, Mcclean got a 23-yard touchdown run after a false start against Bishop.

Whittier Christian finally converted their first, first down of the game on a QB run in the second quarter and managed to come away with a field goal. On the kickoff, the Heralds managed to recover their onside kick but overturned the ball almost immediately. The Broncos went on to convert a 4th and 7 after a false start, and pick up another TD pass for Mcclean to Braithwaite for 30 yards despite a low snap that got loose on the play. The Broncos had another bad snap on their PAT attempt, but Sophomore kicker Christian Morales recovered the ball and ran in for a 2 point conversion.  Bishop’s defense made one more stop before the half, that included a sack on the Herald’s quarterback.

The Broncos opened the second half with a 46 yard TD run by Luke Mcclean on the second play of the drive, and the Bronco defense was just as solid as usual, stuffing a fourth down conversion attempt by the Heralds. Christian Morales successfully kicked a field goal to add to the Broncos already sizable lead. In the fourth Clay Omohundro completed a 10 yard TD pass to Senior Mark Mayhugh, meanwhile on the other side of the ball, the Bronco defense remained tough, but the Heralds wound up scoring in the final seconds of the game, with the final score ending up at 53-9.

Coach Palu said that the “defense was outstanding and special teams were solid” and that the team was “able to develop depth by getting everyone involved.” The Broncos next game will be on the road against Burroughs this Friday, so remember to wish them luck.
