SCAMP- The Sierra branch of the California Aviation Mentoring Program

SCAMP is an aviation program created to develop a long-term mentoring program for high school teenagers (15-19), to introduce the concepts of aircraft flight and design/construction by using aviation as the foundational tool. The elements of this program are also elements of STEM programs, it will reinforce the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.

Participates who join will assist in the construction of an actual two place airplane, purchased as a kit and built in phases. This will be done under the guidance of a technical adviser and the mentors involved in this program.

During this process, participates will not only learn how to safely handle the tools and materials involved in the build, they will also learn design parameters, how to read complex plans, and they’ll learn construction techniques involving the various materials used in the build.

More importantly, they will enhance their social and communication skills as they learn to work with each other as a team and with their mentors. As an added bonus, they’ll be given an opportunity to fly in, and/or pilot, a general aviation aircraft under the EAA’s Young Eagles program.

The goal of this program is to build relationships and to give these young people an excitement about learning. SCAMP wants to expose these kids to a world they might not even know existed for them. SCAMP wants to see them succeed -not all will go on to college- but they can all be strategic members of their community

SCAMP was started in 2007 with a program based in Palmdale, CA. The organization was recognized by the County of Los Angeles for service to that community.

Previous participates have gone on to Cal Poly for engineering, Embry Riddle for aeronautics and some to the Air Force Academy. Others have gone to community college -kids that might not have considered college at all for themselves! Still others have gone into the workforce and are solid members of their community.

The projected start-up in Bishop, CA, is Spring, 2018. Meetings will be in the evenings, one day per week (time, date, and place to be announced). SCAMP is a non-profit program and falls under the umbrella of First Southern Baptist Church, a 501(c)3, 251, Sierra St., Bishop, CA.

This program is free to all participates, but donations are always welcomed. All donations should be payable to: First Southern Baptist Church, referencing SCAMP in the memo section.
