The Bishop Broncos Ice Hockey team won their league title this past Sunday with a 6-3 win over Kern County Knights Gold. The win capped the season for the Broncos with an overall record of 13 wins, 2 loses and 1 overtime loss earning them the Daryl Evans Cup as Champions of the Junior Varsity Division. Sunday’s Championship match was played at the Toyota Sports Performance Center, El Segundo.
In the championship game Kern County struck first on a power play goal but Bishop answered back with a Brayden Morely goal at the 7 minute mark. Benjamin Landsteiner and Soren Davis assisted on the goal. Three minutes later Morely added his second goal off an assist by Konnor Johnston giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead at the end of the 1st period.
The Knights evened the match early in the 2nd period on a power play goal but Bronco Cuinn Greene put the Broncos back on top with a goal at the 6 minute mark thanks to an assist from Reed Carpenter. Kern County then evented the score at 3-3 at the close of the 2nd period.
Bishop dominated the 3rd period with goals by Hunter Dailey, Brayden Morley (securing his hat trick) and Benjamin Landsteiner. Lansteiner’s empty netter put the Broncos on top 6-3. Morley, Carpenter and Wyatt Taylor all had 3rd period assists.
The roster includes 16 BUHS students including Reed Carpenter, Caleb Cytika, Dallas Coffman, William Daily, Soren Davis, Elliott Douda, Lincoln Durbin, Hudson Elia, Klara Grenne, Cuinn Grenne, Konner Khonston, Robby Mcbride, Brayden Morley, Adan Perez, Aiden Sexton, Wyatt Taylor. Non-BUHS students on the team include Amos Eggleston, Abigail Landsteiner, Benjamin Landsteiner
The Broncos are coached by Ken Carpenter, Chris Talbot and Nate Cimino. Melissa Carpenter is the team’s manager.
Several Broncos Hockey Players also skated with Royal Recognition patches for academic excellence. Students must have a 3.8 grade point average or higher to earn the honor. Broncos with the honor are, Caleb Chytha, Konnor Johnston, Wyatt Taylor, Hunter Dailey, Aiden Sexton, Soren Davis, Hudson Elia, Cuinn Greene, Klara Greene, Ben Landsteiner, and Abby Landsteiner.
