Homecoming Tailgate

Tailgating is always fun; and this year’s BUHS Homecoming tailgate was no exception. Before the big game, tailgate attendees pumped up the school spirit with blue and white colored beads and face paint. And no tailgate is complete without great food! Indian Tacos and free sodas were available for hungry students. In all, the tailgate was a great way to unite people.

One question that stuck with me was whether this was a true tailgate. A tailgate is traditionally where people decorate their cars, pull them up into the parking lot, play music, and have a party in the back of their vehicle. Therefore, if a tailgate by definition has to include cars or trucks – can we truly call the BUHS pre-homecoming festivities a “tailgate”?

Regardless of the event name, tailgate or otherwise, it was a great way to come together for a like purpose: good friends, good food, laughter, and of course getting pumped up for football.

An observation I made was that there were some students that didn’t seem to know what a tailgate was or what to expect. A thought for next year would include more of a marketing strategy ahead of time, with a competitive edge– maybe have awards for the most decorated car or truck, or an award for the best display of school spirit. Perhaps once more students invest in the pre-game excitement the event will flourish. And the bigger the tailgate is, the greater the school spirit!
