Campus Involvement

Campus+Involvement

Our campus is our second home, we spend 5 days a week for 8 hours here, learning. Just like your home, you help around and do chores. You get involved with family and you take pride in your home. It is our job to help around with the school because we should treat it like any other home. Why Should You Get Involved on Campus?

Besides community service that is required for graduation, there are many other things that you can help with just out of the kindness of your heart. Maybe the campus is dirty and their setting up a clean up at lunch or afterschool, would you go? No credit or community service hours. Some say getting involved prepares you for life away from home, like your college life. You start to develop relationships with peers, community members, and teachers. You’ll  learn how to communicate and work with a diverse group of people. Getting involved is good role modeling for siblings, family members, and younger individuals.

I interviewed two of my peers about this topic. Jesus Talamantes and Hana Hogan. Jesus, a senior this year, told me getting involved is a good thing because extra help can make a difference. I asked if they would be more involved if there were more options on campus offered and he responded with “Maybe, if I like the things being offered.” I asked him a follow up, “Why would you get involved then? And what are some of the rewarding aspects?” He said “because I like the things being offered, and i’ll get to do something I like with people who share the same interests.”

On the other hand, there are some of our BUHS students who think otherwise. Some say. Getting involved can get in the way of school, homework, and your job. I interviewed another one of my peer’s, Hana, a sophomore, said, “No because you don’t want to do it on your free time.” I then began to ask her the same questions I did with Jesus, if they would be more involved if there were more options on helping out, if their were more being offered? Hana said, “Maybe, if it’s something that interests me, if their was a competitive eating contest I’m down”. My opinion, I think everyone would be down for that. My last question asked was about what are the rewarding aspects of getting involved, “I don’t know, I don’t like clubs because they’re putting a label on a little group and people seem to have certain expectations for that one little club.”

Everyone has an opinion on this topic, some feel strongly either side and other’s don’t mind at all, if you do want to get involved, there’s clubs, you can participate in a sport, helping out at school events or games, and most importantly, school spirit. All these are a great way to get involved and helping out your school will benefit them and you. What’s your opinion? Leave it in the comments below!
