Seniors and Juniors Prepare to Battle it out for Bragging Rights

The third annual Iron Man volleyball game is almost upon us and bragging rights are on the line. With the seniors having lost last year they are certainly looking for a W, while the juniors will be looking for victory in underdog fashion. With the best both classes have to offer out there on the court filled with competitive spirit, this year’s Iron Man match is sure to be a great one.

After a quick interview with Mrs. Frigerio, head volleyball coach, it was discovered that the decision for the game to be renamed Iron Man was decided on by the volleyball players themselves.  According to coach Frigerio,  “powder puff is what we refer to the girls playing football, so that makes sense because they are the softer, fluffier version of the game. The name didn’t really transfer to the boys playing volleyball, because they are bigger and stronger, so we decided Iron man volleyball was a better title.”

The coaches for the senior team are captains Rebeka Riesen and Ashley Worley along with their teammates Jade Whiteside, Lexie Sigler and Kassidie Duckey.  The junior coaching staff consists of captain Sydney Frigerio joined by her teammates Danica Thornburg, Jenna Andersen and Lindsey Laughon. These player/coaches will be given the difficult task of trying to build a winning team out of their respective classmates who are, generally speaking, inexperienced with the sport.

According to Danica Thornburg, one of the coaches for the junior team, she is completely confident in her ability to coach a team given her previous experience as she has been apart of a yearly clinic for students in middle school, where she and her teammates “teach [the middle schoolers] basic skills.” When asked if she thought she could prepare the Juniors could win she said “I definitely think I could prepare the juniors to beat the seniors. We have a group that is very spirited and athletic; with some basic skills they could easily take the win.”

Everyone involved with the game, coaches and players alike, are looking forward to Wednesday 9/27, especially Senior Lorenzo Parra. Lorenzo is “very excited for the game” because it is “a big thing [he is] looking forward to” in his last year here at BUHS. In fact he is so enthusiastic about this game that he plans on sporting “the spandex look”, believing that his image “will be burned into the minds of everyone there and [he] will be the talk of the school for years and years to come”. In addition to his belief that wearing spandex is a good idea Parra also believes that the Seniors “will win this year, because as we all know, Seniors are the best!”
