An Opinion On Immigration

The disagreement between Donald Trump and the Democratic congressional leaders over how to address unauthorized immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border has led to a government shutdown, which is the longest shutdown on record.

In the recent years, there has been a decrease in unauthorized immigrants from Mexico, and an increase of immigrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Meanwhile, a growing share of unauthorized immigrants were not people who entered the country illegally, but they had arrived legally and then over stayed their visas.

“We have an invasion of drugs and criminals coming in” says Trump in an announcement that he will declare a National Emergency in order to secure funding to build a wall at the southern border. Most drugs being brought into the U.S. from the southern border are hidden in legal shipments, few shipments of the illegal drugs are actually transported through the desert. People coming into the U.S. illegally are being inaccurately classified as “criminals”, they are human beings in search of better opportunities for themselves and their families that this great country has to offer. They work long hours for minimum wage in order to feed their families and send their kids to school, in hopes that their kids have a bright future. They are not all criminals, they are hardworking people that have jobs that no one else wants to do. They risk a lot just to work humble jobs to survive,therefore they should not be looked down upon.
