JV Mathletes Secure Second @ Boron 2/14/18
March 19, 2018
Mathletes finished strong in Boron
After an intense 4-meet season, the BUHS Junior Varsity Mathletes made it to the finish line at Boron High School on February 14th. At the meet, the Mathletes scored a total of 14 points, second only to Desert High School’s 19 points. Impressive, considering that around 50 students from seven schools were present that day.
The Mathletes took home four individual placings for this meet on top of their second place finish. Jordan Cooper, a freshman, received an individual placing of 3rd with 4 points, while sophomores Scott Hennarty and Rachel Fitt, and freshman Clara Place, all tied for 4th with 3 points. Abigail Ball, Sierra Burror, and Nick Jacobs also contributed their points to the team’s final score for this meet.
At the end of the 5 individual rounds, the team collaborates on a final problem, the Team Problem, which they have 10 minutes to solve. Take a look at the team problem from this meet:
A relatively prime Pythagorean Triple is a set of 3 integers so that a²+b²=c² such that no integer (besides 1) divide a, b, and c evenly (Think 3-4-5 and 5-12-13).
Find integers that are triples for a=7, 11, and 19.
Because this was the Mathletes’ last meet of the season, all the scores from the previous meets were added together to determine the 2017-2018 JV Mathletes Champions. Out of seven schools, our Junior Varsity Mathletes finished in second place!
