Success Volunteers Lend a Helping Hand for Senior Interviews

This week, seniors had their Success interviews, where they shared their portfolios from Success 104 with community volunteers and were questioned about their plans for the future. The interviews took place all week, and after mine,  I had the opportunity to interview Sherri Lisius, a volunteer conducting these interviews.

Sherri Lisius first heard about volunteering to interview seniors when guidance counselor Lara Anderson visited the Eastern Sierra Women in STEM meeting and asked members of the organization if they would like to participate. Lisius, a member of Eastern Sierra Women in STEM, a group designed to unite, support, and encourage local women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers, happily signed up to be an interviewer.

Lisius volunteered because she “[doesn’t] get a lot of experience with people of all ages,” and wants to understand more about how teenagers plan for their future in order to better support women going into STEM jobs.

Based on the interviews Lisius participated in, she was very inspired by what she saw. “This is fantastic,” she said of the interviews, “as a community member who often wants to hire people, I was really impressed [with the interviews].” Lisius added that after conducting the interviews, she is considering engaging more with high schoolers interested in STEM fields to help them achieve their goals.

The Success interviews provide practice for students heading off to college, the workforce, or trade schools to tackle real-life interviews, and could not have taken place without the help of local volunteers. Overall, the interviews seemed to be successful for students, and BUHS thanks the volunteers for donating their time!
