Nick Foles Leads Philadelphia to Their First Championship
Last night, history was made when the Philadelphia Eagles won their first Superbowl in Franchise History and second string quarterback, and Superbowl MVP, Nick Foles became the second quarterback to ever beat Tom Brady in a Superbowl. The first quarter of the game saw the Eagles receive the kick-off a get a field goal out of their first drive. New England did the same, and after getting the ball back, the Eagles scored the first touchdown of the game on a 34 yard pass to Alshon Jeffery, but missed the PAT. New England looked like they were ready to answer with a touchdown of their own but after being stopped inside the ten, the Patriots missed their field goal attempt due to a bad hold at the start of the second quarter.
The Eagles then went on to put the ball in the end zone again on 21 yard run by LeGarrette Blount. The Patriots responded with a field goal and a 26 yard rushing TD by James white after an interception by Duron Harmon. The Eagles went into the second half leading 22-12 after a creative and impressive play that had tight end Trey Burton complete a touchdown pass to Nick Foles with just over 30 seconds on the clock.
The Patriots made some changes to their play calling and were able to outscore the Eagles 14-7 in the third quarter, large in part to Tom Brady being able to find Gronkowski for two big plays, including a TD pass. Nick Foles was able to find Core Clement in the back of the end zone in the first of two heavily reviewed touchdowns.
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter that was too close for comfort for Eagles fans like myself. The Patriots took over for the first time in the fourth quarter after rookie Jake Elliot kicked a 46 yard, extending Phillie’s lead to 32-26. Brady answered with a TD pass to Gronkowski taking the lead for the first time in the game. Foles was able to come back and move the ball down the field in a drive the culminate in an overly reviewed 11 yard TD pass to Zach Ertz. The game was far from over though as the Patriots took over with 2:21 on the clock and a timeout. After a first down completion, Brandon Graham forced a fumble from Brady and the Eagles recovered, kicking a field goal and moving the score to 41-33. The game came down to a Hail Mary from Tom Brady in the last three seconds of the game, but the pass fell incomplete, giving the Eagles their first Superbowl victory in franchise history.
