BUHS Mathletes Win

The BUHS Varsity Mathletes hit the ground running, and earned their first victory of the season in Rosamond on Wednesday. With two meets left, the Mathletes are well on their way to snag the overall first place title for the 2017-2018 season!

An impressive 27 points for their first place, plus four individual placings, was all the team needed for a successful meet at Rosamond High School. Jim Tomasek earned an individual 2nd place with 6 points, Kristen Lamb and Dylan Fitt tied for 3rd with 5 points, and Carter Silva landed in 4th place with 4 points. Jeanine Lomaintewa, Young Jin Kim, Jeniffer Velazquez, Taryn Benson, and Sam Omondi also contributed to the total team score.

The Mathletes went up against 46 other students from 8 other schools, so their victory was anything but easy. This problem from the 4th round of the meet shows that the Mathletes’ word problems are no easy task:
The side of an equilateral triangle is “x” units. A circle is inscribed in the triangle and a square is inscribed in the circle. Find the area of the square in terms of x.

The Varsity Mathletes’ next meet is on February 28th at Trona High School, followed by their final home meet on March 21st!
