Pitch Perfect 3 Goes Flat; A Review

Grace Griego, Arts and Entertainment Editor

The Pitch Perfect series has become a cult classic since the release of the first movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the first and second movies, but unfortunately, the end to this series did not end on a high note. With a ridiculous plot, mediocre writing, and a loss of some fan favorite characters, this movie was pretty disappointing for me. Its only saving graces are the songs and the humor, but overall it failed to wrap up the series.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Let’s start off with the plot and just talk about Fat Amy’s dad and that whole tangent. The girls have all gone off with their own lives and have found unsatisfying jobs, so they obviously leap at the chance to perform with each other again and tour the world to win a competition to open for DJ Khaled. That sounds perfectly fine to me, but then we get a look into Fat Amy’s past. Apparently her dad is a super criminal and only wants to get back into her life because she’s a secret millionaire and doesn’t know it. He then kidnaps her friends to lure Fat Amy to his boat and force her to give him access to her bank account. This whole relationship had absolutely zero build up in the previous movies and seemed to come out of nowhere. At least with Aubrey we got to hear all of her father’s weird sayings in the previous films so we knew he existed. The film took a weird campy turn and the film ended up being an attempt at a spy movie.

Now onto the relationships in the movie. I was sad to see there was only a mention of what happened with Jesse and Bumper, but there wasn’t even a one line mention of what happened to Benji. Is he still with Emily? Is he doing magic or singing or maybe even both? Is he even alive? I have no clue. I understand that actors can’t all do every movie because they’re doing other projects and so on, but there wasn’t even any mention of Benji. The other members of the acapella groups from college like Donald were also just not talked about at all.

Chicago was added purely to be Chloe’s love interest so I don’t really have anything to say about him or their relationship. It felt a bit forced like the writers had to pair the Bellas off for the last movie. Lily and the DJ also paired off but that was more for comedic purposes and I found that odd couple to be perfect for each other. I thought Becca and Theo were also going to be paired off, but they ended up kind of having just a work relationship, but it’s insinuated that there’s more there. Theo was a perfectly fine character, but since he was just introduced in the last movie, he just couldn’t measure up to Jesse and just felt like a substitute.

I always look forward to the Riff Offs in the Pitch Perfect movies, so even if I wasn’t enjoying this movie as much as its predecessors, I thought the Riff Off would at least be something I could look forward to. Unfortunately, this Riff Off was the poorest out of the three. The songs were catchy and that was nice, but the Bellas were facing off against bands and people who used instruments aside from their voices. Singing acapella is genuinely hard and I would have preferred if it was just a Riff Off between acapella groups so they’re on equal footing. The rules were cast aside and it just wasn’t as fun as the previous Riff Offs.

Thankfully, I did enjoy a majority of the songs that the Bellas performed. My favorites would probably have to be Cake By The Ocean by DNCE and Toxic by Britney Spears. The songs were full of energy and great vocals, and those two in particular were fantastic. After Beca called up the Bellas to sing together one last time (which I thought was a little counterintuitive considering the fact that DJ Khaled specifically asked only Beca to perform), I’ll admit I got a little emotional at the ending. When the scenes from all the previous movies started playing I could see how close the cast got to be and that they all had a lot of fun making these movies.

This movie was certainly fun and I have to admit that seeing Fat Amy beat up numerous guys during the boat scene was absolutely ridiculous, but hilarious. This wasn’t the perfect ending to the Pitch Perfect series and certainly not a perfect movie, but it was still full of great songs and laughs. I give this movie a 6/10 stars. It wasn’t absolutely terrible but it didn’t live up to the Pitch Perfect hype. Did you guys see Pitch Perfect 3? What did you think of it? Let me know in the comments down below!
