Varsity Mathletes Sum Up To Second @ Kern Valley 12/6/17

Jeniffer Velazquez

The BUHS Varsity Mathletes travelled to Kern Valley High School on Wednesday, December 6th, and came out with a strong finish of second place with 18 points! So far, the Mathletes have finished second at every meet this season, but with three meets remaining, they can still bounce back and snag the first place title at the end of the season. Jim Tomasek and Kristen Lamb scored 6 and 4 points respectively for their team, therefore granting them well-earned 2nd and 4th place individual titles. Dylan Fitt and Carter Silva both scored 2 points; and Arianna Pope, Sam Omondi, Martin Cruz, Taryn Benson, and Nathan Gardea also contributed their points to the overall score. With 52 students and 7 other schools at the meet, these placings are absolutely impressive.

The Mathletes were faced with challenging problems this meet, but they came out with a strong finish regardless. Take a look at one of the problems from that week:

6. Find the coefficient of the fourth term of (2x+3y)⁹?

The next Varsity Mathletes meet is on January 31st in Rosamond, so there’s plenty of time for them to polish up and come out victorious!
