Varsity Mathletes take second place at second meet of the season

On Wednesday, October 25th, the BUHS Varsity Mathletes team traveled down to Silver Valley High School in Yermo to compete against seven schools in their second meet of the year. With a total of 21 points, the Mathletes landed 2nd place in the meet, 8 points behind Desert High School’s 29 points. Each Mathlete can score a maximum of 10 points that contribute to the team’s overall score; and Jim Tomasek led the pack with a whopping 7 points and an individual 1st place. Following him was Jeanine Lomaintewa with 4 points and 3rd place, Jeniffer Velazquez with 3 points and 4th place, and Arianna Pope and Carter Silva with 2 points. Mert West, Sam Omondi, Tami Lee, and Taryn Benson also contributed their points to the score.

In total, 56 students participated in the Meet on Wednesday, and 3 of our Mathletes placed individually. To get an idea of the kinds of problems the Mathletes have to solve (considering they have 10 minutes to do 2 problems), take a look at a question from the 2nd round of last week’s meet:
4. Rewrite the equation in vertex form: y=3x²+8x+2

When asked about the team’s ability to bounce back after two second places in a row, Coach Buchholz said that “the team is dedicated. If they want to improve, they will.” The Varsity Mathletes have enough time to improve and come out on top: the next meet is on December 6th at Kern Valley High School.
