Friday, the 24th two Bishop Broncos wrestled at the Central Section Championships, also called Masters. This tournament has the best wrestlers in the Central Section: 32 wrestlers in each of 14 weight classes, for a total of 448 wrestlers from 93 schools. The top 10 wrestlers in each weight class from Masters qualify for the California State Championship, which will have the top 40 wrestlers in the state.
The Bishop Bronco wrestlers were Mikey Trejo at 159 pounds and Kano Graves at 167 pounds. Mikey Trejo lost his first match, putting him in the consolation bracket, but he bounced back in his next match. Mikey was ahead 6-2 then pinned his opponent from Righetti in 4 minutes, 2 seconds. Unfortunately, he lost his next match to a wrestler from Paso Robles, which put him out of the tournament. Mikey finished as one of the top 24 wrestlers in the Central Section.
Kano Graves started off by winning his first match by pinning his opponent from Tehachapi in 3 minutes, 43 seconds. In his next match, Kano went up against a wrestler who was ranked #6 in the tournament. The match went the full 6 minutes but Kano lost 4 to 8, putting him in the consolation bracket. Kano won his next match with a dominating 14 to 7 win over a wrestler from Porterville. His next opponent from Clovis East proved more difficult and Kano lost 2 to 7. Kano finished as one of the top 16 wrestlers in the Central Section. Of the 93 schools attending the Masters tournament, Bishop finished in 56th place – not bad for a team with just 2 wrestlers. 12 teams did not earn any points.
Head Coach Brady Howell said, “All in all this was a successful season as my first year as head coach with a lot of improvement shown from every one of my wrestlers. I plan on continuing to grow and am looking forward to many more successful seasons.“
