Interview with Gabi Cortez: College Golf in Colorado

Kiara Cox

As my partner in Bronco Roundup, Gabi Cortez, was interviewing me on my upcoming journey into playing my favorite sport at the collegiate level, I got an insight on her new, exciting journey as well. Gabi has returned to Bishop Union High School from spending a year in Bakersfield to finish out her senior year. She is an outstanding, dedicated golfer and has committed to play for a Division II program in Colorado. Our conversation went as follows:

Me: What is the name of your school and where is it located?

Gabi: Colorado Christian University, it is located in Lakewood, Colorado.

Me: Have you ever been to Colorado before you chose this school?

Gabi: No, I did not.

Me: How and why did you choose this school?

Gabi: The coach reached out to me and asked if I would like to pay a visit to the school.

Me: How did you become connected with the coach?

Gabi: He found me through a recruiting site called NCSA. He then emailed me information and said he was interested in me joining the team.

Me: Have you met the coach yet or any of your teammates?

Gabi: I met the coach and a few of the other girls, but I will get to meet the rest this upcoming weekend.

Me: How will you compete and how often will you be traveling?

Gabi: CCU is a D2 school, we compete with other D2 schools. We are also included in the NCCAA which means we compete with other Christian universities. I’ll be traveling mostly in the spring, about once a week for two to three months.

Me: When will you have to leave Bishop?

Gabi: In the beginning of August, about a week before school begins.

Me: Are you nervous or excited to live in a new state?

Gabi: I’m excited to live in Colorado, but I am a little nervous to be so far away from my family.

Me: What are you planning to major in?

Gabi: Business Administration-Marketing, minoring in Communications.

Me: What are you looking forward to the most?

Gabi:  I am looking forward to being in a totally new environment and being around and meeting new people who share the same interests as me. I am also excited to be in a Christian Community.

Wishing Gabi the best of luck!
