5 Books To Pick Up On Payday

Jeniffer Velazquez

What kind of books do you invest in?

There are a large sum of books out there in the world, and if you’re an avid bookwork like I am, your one and only dream is to have enough money to buy and read them all. But once payday comes around, or you’ve suddenly acquired a multitude of Spellbinder Books and Barnes and Noble giftcards after a birthday party (see: me), you might need a go-to list for books you need to read this time around. Netflix series are coming out, books are being made into movies, and it’s only a matter of time before the original covers are replaced by the new ones.

To make the search just a bit easier on you, I’ve rounded up a list of 5 books you need to read when your paycheck rolls around. I am a YA-novel junkie, so most of these books will fall into that category. Do not fret, however, all of these books will have something different about them that can suit whatever desire you have in a novel.

  1. All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

If you’re into angsty teen romance novels, this book is just right for you. Theodore Finch and Violet Markey are a match made in opposite heaven – Violet is popular, an all-around goody-two-shoes, and “Finch” is a boy who struggles with finding a true personality for himself. They’re paired up for a school project, and the rest is history for the two. I won’t spoil anything more, but just know that you’ll need tissues after you become attached to this mismatched couple. My heart still hurts thinking about it.

  1. Something Real by Heather Demetrios

This book dives into the world of reality TV, where the Baker’s Dozen family has their issues come to the surface. The book’s main character, Chloe Baker, changed her name from Bonnie to escape the consequences that came with her family’s fame in her childhood. She vows to expose how being on the show gravely changed her life, and now that the show might be reprised, she will do everything in her power to keep it, and her family, off the air for good. I loved this book for both the scary reality behind “reality” television, and, bless my hopeless-romantic soul, Chloe’s relationship with one of her classmates, Patrick Sheldon.

  1. Lucky by Alice Sebold

I have never read a more important, riveting story in my life. Alice Sebold tells the real-life story of her brutal rape while she was in college, and details the aftermath of it all. With raw, page-turning confessions and her crushingly realistic experiences, Lucky shows the real side of a victim caught in the justice system and, overall, the real world.

  1. The Sun is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon

Again, the cheesy romantic in me has come to life. Natasha and Daniel meet on probably the unluckiest day, both set on meetings that could potentially change both their lives. They manage to fall in love despite the limited hours they have left together before Natasha’s presumptive deportation back to Jamaica. This book left me in awe at it’s all-too-real ending, and I found myself relating to phrases and ideas that I never thought I would. Another mismatched, untimely pair, but extraordinary to read through.

  1. We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach

Have you ever thought to yourself, “What would I do if I knew the world was ending soon?” In this captivating story by Tommy Wallach, a group of teens reflects on this question, and answers it in the only honest way possible – the world is actually going to end. All of them have reputations they want to live up to, or leave behind, or just do the things they never had the guts to do before they knew time was running short. I’ll leave the rest up to you, the reader, to find out what else happens in this relatable, funny, yet emotional read.
