The End of My Childhood; Logan Review

Grace Griego

Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for 17 years. I am 17 years old. Hugh has played a pivotal role in my life and has been there as Wolverine for literally my entire childhood. Logan greatly exceeded my expectations and I encourage everyone to see Logan, even if you aren’t a real big superhero movie fan. This movie felt like the end of an era and I left the theater feeling a strange mix of sadness, nostalgia, and gratefulness. Although the X-Men franchise has had it’s ups and downs and not everyone has liked Jackman’s portrayal of the Wolverine, this movie did justice to Wolverine.

First off I have to talk about my personal favorite character of this movie, Laura. The little girl who played Laura (Dafne Keen) did an astounding job and I see great things in her future. There’s a fine line between being overpowered to the point of being annoying and just being impressively tough and Dafne was able to portray Laura perfectly. Laura had a feral and wild power that made her turn out be an extremely loveable little girl with murderous tendencies. Considering the fact that Laura does not speak for the first ¾ of the movie, I was taken aback by how high pitched her voice was when she finally did speak. Laura had to suffer throughout the movie and had to become an adult so quickly that I forgot how young the character actually was. Whenever Laura did happen to show a hint of childishness I was left in stitches from laughing so hard and I am sure that she will be a fan favorite Halloween costume this year.

Logan was one of the most heartbreaking characters in this film. If you had not seen any of the previous X-Men movies then you would probably view Logan as a gruff and mean spirited man. However, for those who have previous knowledge on Wolverine will know what he himself has suffered through. Seeing Logan drink away his pain and be in continuous pain while still managing to take care of Charles was like a swift kick to the chest. The dynamic between Logan and Laura was a really charming and pivotal point in the movie. Logan was very reluctant to take care of Laura, but Laura was pretty capable of taking care of herself anyhow. The real bonding came near the ending of the movie and seeing a little girl take care of a grown man was a bittersweet experience. Charles also cared deeply for Laura and I loved seeing him try to speak Spanish so Laura could understand everything a bit better.

The plot of this movie kept everything going at a fast pace and there was plenty of comic book violence to keep fans interested. I never felt bored and overall, this movie was an emotional rollercoaster. SPOILER ALERT! TURN BACK NOW! I just have to emphasize how hard the ending of this movie hit me. When Laura grabbed a dying Logan’s hand and whispered out, “Dad?” I was hit with a wave of sadness. I was already pretty emotional from Charles and that poor family’s death and now I had to deal with seeing one of my favorite childhood superhero’s death. I really have to admire Dafne’s acting during this scene as well because usually child actors overplay crying and make it overly dramatic and unrealistic, but this scene was simply heartbreaking. A majority of this film was heartbreaking. I was especially taken aback from the family’s death. All they did was give Charles, Logan, and Laura a nice dinner and a place to stay. The dinner scene was one of the only uplifting scenes in this film. Their hospitality was repaid by a visit from X-24. This movie skipped out on cheesy one liners that provide comic relief and focused on the story and character development that resulted in an amazing and realistic superhero movie. The very end of this movie is when I was hit with nostalgia. I was confused as to what Laura was doing with the cross on Logan’s grave and when I realized she turned it on its side to make an X, I was both shocked and emotional. It really sunk in during that moment that Hugh Jackman’s time as Wolverine has come to an end.

Overall, I give this movie  9/10 stars. This movie provided fleshed out characters, a great plot, amazing action sequences, and will be nostalgic for any fan of Wolverine. I recommend everyone to see Logan and let me know down in the comments what you thought of Logan!
