Homeroom Column
December 21, 2016
Homeroom, you either love it or you hate it. Homeroom is a 30 minute period between 4th period and lunch, in which student can do homework, study or got to another class to get help in a subject that you don’t really understand. But, there are rules and restrictions to where, when and how we can go to other classrooms. For example, if you need help say in your math class, you would need to get a yellow pass that basically says what class you’re going to, why you are going there and what what teacher you are going to. This process can take a while at times, cutting time away from your already brief 30 minutes of help.
On top of that, students are required to attend a success class. This class takes over homeroom for 6 weeks and makes students think about and write extensively about what they want for a career and how they plan to get there. I will admit that this class can be helpful to students who need that little push in the right direction. But unfortunately, the majority of the kids in the class already have their plan laid out for them, what they want to do with their life and what college they want to attend. This leaves these kids on a seemingly desolate 30 minute island where they and to write out what they want to do for a living in a workbook, Tuesday through Thursday. This class is one that you are required to sit in until your six weeks are up, and in that time if say you need to go do test corrections or make up a test that you were absent for, whelp you’re screwed. You aren’t allowed to go do the things that are more meaningful to your GPA and future because they want you sit in a room and just talk about your future and how you will succeed. The irony right? They would rather have you sit and talk about how you will achieve your goals, instead of you going out and using your time wisely to make your goals a reality.
So in my opinion, homeroom can be of good use, just not when we are forced to waste this precious time for other useless activities.
