Powwow is this weekend as part of the California Indian Day Celebration spanning from September 22nd to September 24th.
To start Califonia Indian Day is a Walk for Life known as the Suicide Awareness Walk beginning at Toiyabe Indian Health Clinic, registration starts at 6:30 a.m. with a Ceremony at 7:30 a.m. and the walk at 8:00 a.m. then ends at our local Wanaaha Casino. All are welcome to participate and for more information, you can contact Victoria Begay. At 10 a.m. the California Indian Day Parade begins next and the line-up for the said parade is to be by 8:15 on the Wanaaha Casino parking lot. At 11 a.m. there are family games and a BBQ being held at the Barlow Gym and at 2 p.m. in the same gym there is a youth hand game tournament. Later that evening at 7 p.m., Valley Challenge and the Bonehog Hand Game Tournament begins in the Wanaaha Casino Event Center, and at the same time is the Powwow Grand Entry at the Powwow Grounds.
The next day on Saturday, September 23rd at 12 p.m. Powwow starts up again on Powwow grounds, and at 12:30 there is also the Main Hand Game Tournament at the Wanaaha Casino Event Center which will be on the old side of the casino. At 2 p.m. on the Powwow grounds Elders start their traditional crafts contest and to proceed at 3:00 they will have a Food contest. At 5:00, there is a Dinner break BBQ. Powwow resumes at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, September 24th, There is the Chuptoohee Card Tournament at 11:00 a.m. and The Fast 5 Tournament at the Wanaaha Casino Event Center right when you walk through the front entrance at 12:00 a.m. Powwow starts up again with its 3-man Hand game Tourney at 1:00 p.m., To Finish off the Powwow weekend at 3:00 p.m. The Elder’s raffle will conclude and the winner will be announced.
