Will Hennarty is Going to the State Championship
February 22, 2023
This past weekend, senior wrestlers Will Hennarty and John Drew traveled to Buchanan High School in Clovis, California to play in the Masters Tournament, wrestling to qualify for the State Championship. Will Hennarty came out victorious, becoming the first Bishop Union High School male wrestler to qualify for the State Championship since Randy Rodgers made it in 1985. Tia Barfield in 2018 was the last wrestler at Bishop High to also go to State.
We were able to interview Will about his accomplishment and the journey he has ahead. We asked Will how many matches he won to qualify for State, stating that he “wrestled seven times and won four of them.”
When asked about his mindset going into the match, “I couldn’t really leave sad because the goal was to just win a match,” said Will. Will also added, “And not to make Coach Dutton mad.”
We asked Will if he believed in himself going into the qualifying match, “Not at first because the first kid was scary looking,” said Will. The Champ continued, “But after that match, I was feeling pretty good.”
When asked about his favorite technical moves, Will replied, “For neutral, an ankle pick. On bottom, a Granby roll or switch. And on top, a Fairfax.”
Looking to the future, we asked Will how he feels about the State Championship this weekend. “I’m just gonna go have fun with it,” said Will. “If I win a much, cool, but if I don’t it’s still a little disappointing; but whatever.”
We asked Will who he’d like to thank for his success. “Both Coaches, Coach Dutton and Coach Hodges, the whole team, my parents, Brody Berkovatz and John Drew of course,” stated Will.
We wish the best of luck to Will and congratulate him on his massive accomplishment. Hennarty will head to Bakersfield later this week to compete.
