Running Broncos Dominate the Huskies
September 22nd, 2016, Broncos and Mojave traveled up to Shady rest Mammoth, CA. The weather was a cold 44 degrees Fahrenheit and they all had to race in tank tops and running shorts, for the most part the weather was good for running because the cold weather meant no heat exhaustion and stroke. Our high school athletes started stretching and warming up, while the Bishop Colts went against the Mammoth Middle school.
When it finally came time for the Bronco girls to battle it out with the Huskies and Mojave, they were prepared, when the Mammoth Superintendent yelled the start, the girls took off the first hill being conquered with no problem with the Bishop Broncos and Mammoth Huskies. The Bishop Coach Heidi Eldridge stated, ” We have a great girls team this year.” When talking to some of the girls team, they all had positive outlooks on the entire race. When interviewing Emma Place she elicited that, ” The race was fun, Mammoth is a really friendly team and I enjoyed getting to race with them.” Overall the girls race was awesome, the Bronco girls showed lots of team spirit.
After the girls had dominated in the race it was finally time for the guys to race. They were all lined up and ready, Duncan Reid leading the boys in warm up drills and then concluding warm up with a few jumps to get out the jitters. The boys took off, over the first hill and leading to the second up hill of the race, Mammoth was in the lead and led the race till the end, in second was Duncan Reid. When talking to some of the boys at the end of the race, they had the same out look as the girls, a completely positive turn out. When interviewing Owen Omondi he stated,” The race was great, the hardest part was the first hill and trying to keep up the stamina to make it to the next one.”
In conclusion the race turned out well, Bishop won at a total of 16 points. But what exactly is cross country? Well Cross country is a team sport where runners race on a 5 kilometer ( 3.1 mile) course, some including hills and obstacles like river jumping. Scores are based off of the place that an individual runner receives, if a runner comes in first that individual gets one point which is eventually added to the total team score. In the end when the points are added up the lowest score wins the meet. Although this sport is highly vigorous, Cross Country doesn’t receive a lot of commentators so next time you are looking for a sports event to watch check the cross country schedule they’d love to see you out there.
