Q & A With New Senior Tennis Players
A few weeks ago we caught up with returning tennis player, senior Cheyenne Yeager, but this year she is not alone. Elizabeth Poncho and Melissa Castro joined the BUHS Girl’s Tennis Team this year. They both have never played tennis before and are currently seniors at the school and are both excited for the season. Their first home game is next week on Tuesday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m. at the Bishop City Park against rival Kern Valley. Before practice, I did a quick Q & A with them.
Q: What made you decide to play tennis this year, your senior year?
A: Poncho responded to this question by saying, “for the P.E. credits lol.” While Castro said, “I wanted to try something new out this year but also decided to play for the P.E. credits.”
Q: So far, what are your thoughts on tennis? Are you enjoying it?
A: So far, Poncho thinks tennis is super fun and is greatly enjoying it. She is overall glad she decided to play this year and wishes she would have started earlier. Castro said, “yes I am really enjoying tennis and my teammates, they’re really fun to be with. It’s also very fun to play, but it is quite hard, especially since it’s my first year.”
Q: Do you think tennis is a fun sport to play? Why?
A: Poncho says, “I think tennis is a great sport to play because you get to have fun with your friends and be competitive.” Castro responded with, “Yes because it challenges you a lot, one second the ball hits far from you and you miss and the other you’re running back and forth trying to hit the ball.
Q: What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player? Do you prefer singles or doubles?
A: Since it is Poncho’s first year, she says, “my weaknesses are everything. I prefer doubles because I like to work as a team and have that extra support which comes with playing doubles.” Castro says her strengths are “probably running back and forth to hit the ball and my weaknesses would be serving, I can never hit my ball in the right direction.”
Q: What are your plans after graduating from high school?
A: After graduating from high school, Poncho plans on attending a four-year university somewhere preferably in California and Castro plans to go to a 4-year university in northern California and perhaps major in biology or environmental science.
