The Broncos Blowout the Cardinals on Their Way to the CIF Championship Game
In a game with so much on the line, including a trip to CIF Championship game, and a little bit of revenge, the Broncos had some high expectations to live up to. And boy did they not disappoint. The Lindsay Cardinals, who beat the Broncos in last season Championship game, jumped out to an early 2 run lead, but the Broncos didn’t let it get to them and bounced back with runs of their own in the bottom half of the first.
Sophomore Ace Selters got the start and bounced back quickly from his first inning struggles, coming back to shut the Cardinals down. The Broncos tacked on another run in the second before Michael Kubiak came up in the 3rd inning with one of the biggest at-bats of the game; a 3 run tank that cleared the scoreboard in left-center field to give the Broncos an 8-2 lead.
Lindsay responded with their 3rd and last run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning, but that wasn’t enough to stop the red-hot Broncos. Bishop put up 1 run each in the 4th and 5th innings and 3 runs in the 6th before Sophomore Landon Kruse came in and shut the door on the 13-3 win for the Broncos. Unfortunately, we don’t have stats from yesterday’s game, but we would like to give a mention to the MVP of the game, Senior Michael Kubiak, who hit for the cycle and had some of the biggest AB’s of the game.
The championship game is now set for Tuesday, the 21st with Bishop now hosting the Foothill Trojans. The game was originally set to be played at Fresno State University, but due to weather in Fresno, the game will now be played in Bishop at Tatum Field. On Friday afternoon it was announced that the game would be played on Saturday in Bishop, but CIF made the decision to move the game to Tuesday at Foothill’s request.
Bishop Athletic director Stacy Van Nest issued the following statement Friday afternoon.
“The central section commissioner, Jim Crichlow, has now set the division 6 championship game to be Tuesday May 21st at 3:00 in Bishop at Tatum Field versus Foothill. Gates will open at 1:30.”
Ticket prices will be $10 adult or without ASB and $8 for a child or with ASB. The only access to Tatum field will be through the gate located at the south end of the football field on home street.
