Kubo and the Heartbreak; A Review of Kubo and the Two Strings

By: Grace Griego

From the makers of Coraline, Paranorman, and the Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings brings another delightful movie to the screen from Laika Studios. This movie was not as dark as previous movies from Laika Studios, but far from the light heartedness that the Boxtrolls previously provided. Kubo is a young boy with magical powers that he uses to create stories for the people of his village. After a tragic incident, Kubo’s mother never seems to be all there, but Kubo’s stories always seem to brighten her up. Kubo goes on a miraculous journey to save what remains of his family and along the way runs into evil twin sisters, a protective monkey, and a humorous beetle man (Voiced by Matthew McConaughey). This movie has a little something for everyone. There’s beautiful music, a fantastic plot, well crafted characters, and even a cameo from George Takei for any Star Trek fans. The standout stop motion animation will also blow everyone away by its creativity and sheer beauty. The only thing lacking from this movie would be the humor. There are a few well placed jokes here and there, but as a whole Kubo and the Two Strings is a pretty dark movie for kids. To quote a child who I heard in the movie theater “IT’S TOO SAD!” He proclaimed this to his mother and stormed out of the theater. The movie explores dark themes but is overall a tale of love and family. I would recommend everyone to see this film if they have a chance, but maybe only take the older or more mature children.
