Sophomore, Katy Johnston, was recently appointed as UNITY’s Pacific Regional Representative.
UNITY is a national network organization promoting personal development, citizenship, and leadership among Native American youth.
With Katy’s newest title, Pacific Region Representative, she will be representing all of California and Hawaii AI/AN youth on a national level. She will be participating on an executive committee that represents youth from all across the country.
“I submitted an application, representing all of California’s native youth and Hawaii,” Katy said. “I will also be representing my title of Miss Pabanamanina Powwow Princess, Bishop Tribal Youth Council President in Dallas Texas July 2021 at the National Unity Conference.”
Katy applied so that she could become a role model and a leader, learning responsibilities and communicating with people. She is excited and looks forward to traveling and meeting new people.
“I attended my first conference in July of 2017 in Denver Colorado. I was 11 years old,” Katy said. “This was my first time traveling on a plane and my first time seeing so many native youth. It was a really cool experience and ever since then I haven’t stopped going or being involved.”
Katy’s favorite thing about becoming involved is having the opportunity to help her community and being able to bring everything back with her that she has learned.
